Group Project at Metro, Yeshwantpur / kanakpura..

It is a good idea to complete your group project at some of the retailing giants like Reliance Fresh, Metro, Fabmall. You can get to know their supply chain dynamics, the operations and inventory control policies and logistics..

In IT companies, the cycle of bidding, planning, development, testing and implementation is very interesting in itself. Forecasting growth and future manpower needs can also be studies.

All the best..

POM I - Group Project ..

Dear students,

AS you are all aware, executing a group project is mandatory for the course in Production and Operations Management - I. It carries fifteen percentage weightage in your final grade. So you know it cannot be taken lightly.

Through this writeup I want to sensitise you of the initial hurdles /problems / troubles and pains you may face to complete that group activity.

Team composition:
Teaming up not more than five and not less than two of your classmates, you need to locate an industry - manufacturing or service, to carry out the work.

Area of analysis: Manufacturing / Service :
In manufacturing for instance, you are expected to study its operations, what they do, what is their area of core competency, what are the raw materials, the transformation processes, what are the final end products, its distribution, brief about its supply chain, potential markets - domestic and overseas, customers and so on. In service industry, the area of operations, - banking, insurance, retailing, advertising, 3PL (third party logistics providers) and so on. Study and report their supply chains, how value addition takes place, the organisation structure to enable this and so on.
The above points are just indicative of your activities and not complete in itself. You are free to widen the scope of your study. But plan with your industry contacts as to what area specifically you would like to work on and for how long.

Permission / Documentation :
You have to draft the required letters introducing your group members, ( we can sign on them for you on Institute letter heads), outlining the purpose of your visit, seeking permission from companies to carry out the project.

Persistence pays :
Even though you are likely to meet with dejection and resistance initially to your plans, do not give up. Know that persistence pays. The initial neglect ( not intentional) maybe due to the work pressures of the employees. Follow u p with tel calls / personal visits etc till your work scope is finalised. It is a good exercise for you to learn how to negotiate your way through and get your work done from the industry. You may not get such an opportunity again in life !!

Date for submitting the name of companies and the group members :
16 October 2007

Review Meetings ( Min one at least, 15 mins)
During review meetings you can discuss the doubts, hurdles etc with the concerned faculty member and chart future course of action.

Final report :
Not more than 10 pages (20 sides)(including figures) to be submitted on Monday of the penultimate week of the term

Presentation :
During the penultimate week in the evening hours in front of the class, 10 mins duration and 10 mins q&a session.

Even though initially it appears herculean, I can assure you it is worth all the trouble you take. You may not get another opportunity to study industries in future, especially when you have them just across the road. So make good use of this opportunity.

You are welcome to post your doubts/queries to this blog itself.

All the best..
